The Jefferson County History Center relocated to the newly preserved N. G. Edelblute Building (1855-1875) on Historic Brookville's Main Street in March 2004, marking the Bicentennial Year of the county's founding.
Today, the History Center offers research facilities, exhibits, and public programs related to Jefferson County's history, serving as the primary Visitor Center for the 15-county Lumber Heritage Region.
The permanent exhibit is open to the public. It includes sections titled "Out of the Mist," "The Settlers' Lot," "Clear-cuts & Conservation," "Working the Fields," "Moving About," "Buried Treasure," "Business & Industry," and "Into the Woods." Walk through each section, explore the buildings, and learn more from the interpretive touch screens. Let the kids explore the numerous hands-on displays.
The first of several Civil War exhibits commemorating the 150th anniversary of the War. Drumbeat to War focuses on the excitement and expectations of 1861. Within the exhibit, you will find dioramas, depictions, and original artifacts about the recruiting, training, and daily camp life of recruits from Jefferson County.
The Bowdish Model Railroad is the longest-running and most popular exhibit in the collection. The crown of the exhibition is a miniature recreation of Jefferson County, conceived by Charles Bowdish's brilliant mind. Special train shows are held monthly, allowing guests to watch the miniature world come to life.
