The Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association was established on March 17, 1980, and is based on a concept proposed by the Pittsburgh History & Landmarks Foundation. It is a non-profit educational and charitable organization that can accept foundation and other grants and provides tax-exempt status for gifts and bequests from organizations and individuals. Through the PH&LF's efforts, the entire Allegheny Cemetery, along with its buildings, was designated a Landmark and placed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The purpose of the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association is to raise money to maintain the buildings, monuments, horticulture, and landscape of Allegheny Cemetery. More importantly, the goal of the ACHA is to promote the historical, architectural, cultural, and social significance of Allegheny Cemetery through education and community involvement.
Allegheny Cemetery serves as a local landmark, offering a dramatic venue for artists, a vast green space for urban residents, and a hub for Lawrenceville community activities. The Association sponsors an annual community parade honoring veterans on Memorial Day. They also participate in the Lawrenceville Hospitality Tour and Light Up Night, assist hundreds of families conducting genealogical research, and provide Teachers' Guides and tours to area children, from grade school to graduate school.
The Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association also offers specialized tours throughout the year for senior citizens and various other groups. They plan to continue this tradition of promoting the cemetery throughout the coming year with their annual programs and special tours, such as the "Angels of Allegheny" on Saturday, December 2, and an expanded Doo Dah Days: A Celebration of Stephen Foster in July.
On a larger scale, the Association serves as a tourist destination, research and education center, and a source of pride for Pittsburgh, as it is recognized as one of the world's foremost historical cemeteries.
