The hands were gentle but firm as they grasped my lapel. It was 1967, and the voice was strong and insistent: "You people don't realize what you have here. I studied hard to earn my U.S. Citizenship, and what I learned about this land and this town was absolutely amazing to me," he said, "and yet nobody seems to give it any thought. You people must find some way to tell this story."
When no one else seemed ready to "do something" about it, Harry Phillips, a Greek immigrant and local restaurant owner, took the bull by the horns himself and formed a historical society. This was how the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation came into being. From this humble beginning has grown a community organization of some 450 members that has had an enormous impact on the image of Beaver."
In its over 50 years as Beaver's foremost community group, the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation has successfully restored the Fort McIntosh site, the former freight station, and the 1802 Log House, and has played a consulting role in the downtown streetscape.
With strong support from Beaver Borough and the community at large, the Beaver Area Heritage Foundation has boldly completed a $2.3 million capital campaign to create Beaver Station as a vital new asset for Beaver County.
