The Historical Society publishes a quarterly journal of history, Westmoreland History, and a monthly newsletter, Westmoreland Chronicle. It is governed by a policy-making Board of Directors. A paid, full-time Executive Director is responsible for the day-to-day operation of the Society.
The Society's work is carried out by a paid full-time Education Coordinator, a paid office staff, seasonal employees, and volunteers. The Historical Society has a membership of over 1,000 and is one of the fastest-growing organizations of its kind in western Pennsylvania. Membership is open to anyone who wishes to support the Society's mission and work.
With nearly 1,000 members, the Society has tripled its membership during the past years. Commensurate with the membership growth has been the expansion of the Society's services and resources available to the public. Among the Society's many and varied activities and services is a monthly educational program, open to the public and focusing on some aspect of the history of Westmoreland County. Periodic brown bag noon-time programs and speakers open to the public.
Seminars and workshops featuring nationally-known speakers. Publication of the Westmoreland History Magazine three times a year. Publication of a monthly newsletter - The Westmoreland Chronicle. Publication of books and pamphlets relating to Westmoreland County history and genealogy. Entertainment centered on historical themes. The administration and maintenance of the Hanna's Town historical site. Tours to other historical sites in Pennsylvania and surrounding states.
Maintenance of a 200,000-plus-item archival collection includes old photographs, historical documents, diaries, maps, and personal papers relating to the county's history. Maintains a 3,500-volume library of genealogical records and resources. Maintains a reference library for general research into county history. Programs for schools and speakers for groups and organizations. An archaeological collection of over 1 million artifacts from the Hanna's Town site. Collaborative programming with other historical societies, civic groups, and educational institutions.
