For many years, the Greenville Area Historical Society Museum was located on College Avenue in a building owned by Thiel College, known as the Marietta Roth House. Its nine rooms contained the artifacts so generously donated over the past 25 years by the citizens of Greenville and the surrounding area.
In 2002, the college announced its intention to build a chapel on the Roth House site, and in 2004, the Society relocated its museum to its new home, the newly restored historical Waugh House.
Nearly thirty years ago, the First National Bank of PA sold the house to the Society for one dollar. Since then, a special committee has worked on the house, first raising money and then restoring it as funds allowed. To date, the roof has been stabilized, the interior cleaned out and restored to its original eight rooms, a Historical Survey completed, the front porch and windows restored, and much of the brick tuck-pointed. The house was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1997.
The Board has initiated a fundraising campaign after determining that $100,000 will be required to transform the Waugh house into a museum while preserving its integrity. The renovation effort is scheduled to begin in early summer 2003.
