The Crawford County Historical Society

Established in 1880, the Crawford County Historical Society is dedicated to collecting, preserving, and interpreting the rich history of Crawford County. Its archives—among the oldest and most comprehensive genealogical repositories in northwestern Pennsylvania—feature:

  • A robust library of regional and state history, including works by local authors
  • An extensive manuscript and photograph collection
  • A significant archive of Erie Railroad records

Erie Railroad Collection

The Society holds a substantial collection of documents related to the Erie and Erie-Lackawanna Railroads. Housed in approximately 700 storage boxes, this archive includes:

  • Blueprints and maps
  • Locomotive, passenger car, and freight car cards
  • Accident reports
  • A wide array of additional railroad-related materials

An active Railroad Committee is currently engaged in organizing the collection, developing a museum space, and constructing a scale model of the historic Meadville rail yards.

The Crawford County Historical Society's volunteer staff is happy to assist with research requests submitted by mail or in person. To ensure efficient service, please make your request as specific as possible.
