Greene County Historical Society

Founded in 1925, the Greene County Historical Society is a private, non-profit cultural organization dedicated to preserving the vibrant history of Greene County. The Society operates the Historical Museum and Local History Library. It also supports other notable historic sites throughout the county, including the W.A. Young Machine Shop & Foundry in Rice's Landing and the Thomas Hughes House in Jefferson, Pennsylvania.

Since 1971, the Society has operated from its 52-room museum building, home to over 10,000 artifacts that capture the diverse legacy of Greene County. The organization relies on memberships, donations, grants, and volunteers to maintain and share this valuable collection.

The mission of the Greene County Historical Society is: to promote interest in and appreciation of Greene County's heritage by collecting, preserving, and interpreting historical artifacts and stories—presenting them in ways that illuminate who they are, where they've been, and what we pass along to future generations.

Greene County Historical Society Museum
The Museum, built in the 1850s, was a typical Greene County farmhouse made of locally fired brick. In the late 1800s, several wings were added, and it became the Poor Farm to house the county's indigents. They planted crops and raised farm animals that fed them.
