The Lawrence County Historical Society is located in New Castle. The home of former tin plate mogul, George Greer, it is resplendent in it's glorious woodwork and fine leaded beveled glass made by the Fry Glass Company in Rochester, Pennsylvania.
The Society now has the archives of Shenango China and there is a variety of fine china on display. Most of the industrial sites now sit empty. Shenango China, at one time the largest manufacturer of verified china in the world, closed in 1991. It made china for establishments as diverse as Woolworth's, Horn and Hardart, Waldorf Astoria and the dining room of the Gracie Mansion. Castleton, Shenango China's fine dinnerware division, is world renowned for it's high quality and artistic excellence. It has provided china for the Eisenhower and Lyndon Johnson White Houses and U.S. embassies all over the world.
The first floor is furnished as a house museum and the second floor has displays on the country's rich history, including a room dedicated to famous gospel hymn composer and evangelist, Ira D. Sankey.
