When Altoona lost the bid for the Commonwealth of Altoona Pennsylvania’s Railroad Museum in 1965, that didn’t stop local people from pursuing a Railroad Museum for Altoona.
Allatoona
“Altoona” was derived from the Cherokee Indian word “alatoona,” meaning high lands of great worth.
Altoona also ranks in the top third of metropolitan areas because of its low cost of living. With a population of more than 51,000, it is the largest city in Blair County.
The Wall That Heals, a half-scale exact replica of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall, is in Altoona.

Museums
Fort Roberdeau Historic Site and Natural Area includes an 1858 barn containing exhibits and a museum shop, an education center in an 1860 farmhouse, three nature trails, picnic facilities, and White Oak Hall, a large multipurpose facility.
Four in one: The Southern Alleghenies Museum of Art includes four museums in various locations. This museum was established to present and preserve American art. On April 2, 1975, a small group led by Sean M.
Baker Mansion initially was the home of Elias Baker and his family. It now hosts the museum, the county historical society, and a library with a historical archive.
