The original cabin, built by the Cooper family in 1810, was used as a county homestead. It was enlarged after the Civil War, and family descendants remained in it until 1963. In 1976, Cooper Cabin was deeded to the Butler County Historical Society.
The cabin is still furnished with family heirlooms, memorabilia, and other period pieces. Outbuildings include a spinning house, spring house, and tool shed. A self-guided nature trail winds through the more than four acres of land surrounding the cabin. There is also a model oil well and an extensive herb garden.
A living history demonstration is scheduled every Sunday, May through September, beginning at 1:30 p.m. During this time, knowledgeable interpreters lead tours of the buildings and grounds.
The grounds are available for weddings, family reunions, and other special events, by arrangement, and special tours can be arranged at different times.The cabin is located on Cooper Road near Cabot, PA, just off Route 356, approximately 9 miles south of Butler.
