The Vietnam Veterans Memorial of Westmoreland County was dedicated on Saturday, November 11, 2000. The memorial is dedicated to the memory of those from Westmoreland County who gave their lives in service to their country in Vietnam; it also honors those who served and returned home.
The stone came from the same quarry in India as the national memorial. The names of those 97 men who were Killed in Action or are Missing in Action are carved on this stone. The monument is situated in the beautiful Twin Lakes Park in Luxor, Pennsylvania, located in central Westmoreland County. The purpose was to bring a little bit of the national memorial home to Westmoreland County for those who can't make it to Washington, D.C..
The monument was designed by Wanda Albright Clark, a retired art teacher, who had taught art classes in the Bedford Area School District, Bedford, PA, for thirty years. She has a B.S. in Art Education from Indiana University of PA and a Master of Education degree from Frostburg State College, Frostburg, MD. Mrs. Clark's brothers, Robert and William, are both Vietnam Veterans.
Rege Holecko, a Vietnam Veteran, built a scale model of the memorial. Dr. Harry Speedy purchased a gray granite bench.
U.S. Steel's Clairton Works in Clairton, PA, and the Kennemetal Foundation in Latrobe, PA, have purchased flagpoles. The family of a deceased veteran has purchased the third flag pole. Thanks to them for their generosity. The Elliott Company, Jeannette, PA., bought the small stone that stands to the right of the large stone. The memorial stone was purchased by the Vietnam Veterans of Westmoreland County, Inc., through McColly Memorials Inc. of Greensburg.
