Soldiers' Memorial

Allegheny County provided free burials for approximately 3,000 veterans over a 28-year period. There are no raised monuments. Built of limestone and rubble excavated from a quarry within the Allegheny Cemetery, this pleasant compromise between Classical and Modernistic is typical of its time.

In 1937, the cemetery built the Soldiers' Memorial overlooking the central area of military graves. It combines classical and Modernist architectural styles. Many of the graves memorialize soldiers from all wars. Bronze cannons from the Civil War period stand before the Soldiers' Memorial, which was restored by the Allegheny Cemetery Historical Association.

In 2005-2006, Soldiers' Memorial was restored entirely thanks to the Recovery, Restoration and Renewal Campaign. After a year of extensive restoration, the Memorial was ready for the rededication. The restoration of this magnificent monument included complete repointing, stone replacement, the installation of new flagpoles, the revitalization of the frieze and cannon, tree trimming, landscaping, and the installation of new flower beds. The rededication program was successful in honoring our nation's heroes with a renewed memorial that continues to be a source of pride for the community.
