Visit Tour-Ed Mine to learn about the history of mining coal. Take a trip through this educational coal mine and see how coal was dug by hand in 1850 and how modern hydraulic monsters mine coal today.
In Tour-Ed Mine, you can see a complete strip mine operation from beginning to end, back-filled and reclaimed as our ball field and playground.
Visit the Old 1900 Company Store, barbershop, miner's home, blacksmith shop, and 1789 furnished log house. Watch logs being sawed into lumber. Other attractions include our picnic area, authentic 18th-century log cabin, railroad caboose, and vintage turnpike tollbooth.
Did you know that "Out of the Black," an award-winning screenplay, will be filmed on location at Tour-Ed Mine in August 2000?
For Schools
Tour-Ed Mine and Museum is a popular field trip for school children of all ages. Students from schools all over Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia come for the excitement of riding the coal cars, talking with real miners, and traveling deep into the heart of the mine - where all lights are momentarily extinguished - giving most people their first real look at "pitch darkness." Then, it's back to the surface to look at a recreation of a turn-of-the-century mining town, complete with a company store.
The Mine and Museum is open for school tours from May 1st through September 30th. Tours may be scheduled from 9 AM through 4 PM, Monday through Friday. Group tours may be scheduled by calling (724)224-4720.
