Step into the depths of Western Pennsylvania's mining past at Tour-Ed Mine and Museum, a fully operational educational coal mine where history comes to life. Witness the evolution of mining firsthand: from manual hand tools used in 1850 to today's powerful hydraulic machines.

Explore a living legacy of coal mining:

  • Walk through a complete strip mine operation, now reclaimed as a ball field and playground.
  • Discover the charm of a recreated mining town:
    • 1900 Company Store
    • Blacksmith shop
    • Barber shop
    • Miner's home
    • Furnished 1789 log house
    • Authentic 18th-century cabin
    • Vintage tollbooth and railroad caboose
    • Lumber demonstration: logs sawed before your eyes

Did you know: Out of the Black, an award-winning screenplay, was filmed on-site at Tour-Ed Mine in August 2000?

Tour-Ed Mine and Museum is a favorite destination for school field trips across Pennsylvania, Ohio, and West Virginia. Students ride coal cars, speak with real miners, and descend into the mine, where a moment of total darkness offers a rare experience of "pitch black" underground conditions.

Back on the surface, explore the turn-of-the-century mining town, where education meets adventure.
