Ellwood
Ellwood City, in the southern part of Lawrence County, is just 103 years old. It began as a summer resort with a big Victorian style hotel. The Mellon family from Pittsburgh had a summer home there. What is now Pittsburgh Circle was once a bicycle race track. Bicycles played a big part in the history of Ellwood City.
As they were a popular form of transportation, making bicycles was a profitable business needing steel pipe. The first piece of steel pipe made in America was made in Ellwood City in 1895. There is a Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission marker on the site on Lawrence Avenue.
