Greene Township
Greene Township is situated on the south side of the Ohio River, where it separates the adjacent states of West Virginia and Ohio. It was chartered on March 4, 1812, and began as pioneers settled along the historic Mill Creek to use it as a water supply and as a means to power mills that would grind their flour, corn, and other products. Those interested in exploring the history of Greene Township and the surrounding area should visit the South Side Historical Village on the Hookstown Fairgrounds.
In addition to the Hookstown Fairgrounds, Greene Township is also home to the South Side Area School District complex and many small businesses. The main commercial corridor is the intersection of U.S. Route 30 with State Route 168. The Township’s largest employer is the School District. At the same time, many residents are employed at such nearby locations as FirstEnergy’s Beaver Valley Nuclear and Bruce Mansfield Power Plants and National Gypsum, all in adjacent Shippingport Borough. Other residents find employment at the Beaver Medical Center, Beaver Valley, and Robinson Town Centre Malls, as well as Pittsburgh International Airport, all of which are within a 30-minute drive from the Township.
Greene Township has created Mill Creek Community Park, located at 1128 State Route 168, Hookstown. With the help of numerous grants and many willing volunteers, they have three ballfields, two picnic pavilions, a playground, a horseshoe court, a walking track, a Veterans’ Monument, and a concession stand. Open Space is preserved across busy Route 168 on another Township property, purchased with the assistance of a DCNR grant. A walking/cross-country skiing trail with unique features has been constructed as an Eagle Scout project.
The “neighbor-helping-neighbor” spirit is still alive and well in Southwestern Beaver County. Greene Township partners with the adjacent Townships of Hanover, Raccoon, Potter, and Independence in performing road maintenance projects and in a joint recycling program. The Townships have been awarded the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Local Government Service for their unique partnership of working on their roads together and purchasing jointly-owned specialty equipment that none of the Townships could afford on their own.
