Nemacolin Castle exists in an important set of historic contexts. It is a landmark and focal point of Brownsville, one of Southwestern Pennsylvania's most historically important towns. This section of the report outlines the historical themes related to the Castle.
Architecture
Old Economy Village is a six-acre National Historic Landmark administered by the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission since 1919. The historic site has never had a facility designed strictly to accommodate the needs of the modern visitor to the past. The new 22,000 sq. ft.
Kinzua Bridge, a famous Pennsylvania landmark, is designated a National Engineering Landmark. An excursion train travels through the Allegheny National Forest and over the bridge.
Downtown New Castle has four lovely churches. They are the First Christian Church built in 1865, the First Presbyterian Church built in 1896, Trinity Episcopal built in 1907 and Saint Mary's circa 1927. All have lovely architecture and magnificent stained glass. Trinity has two Tiffanys.
The Watson-Curtze Mansion stands as a symbol of the upper class lifestyle of the 1890s in Erie. The Mansion is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Built in two sections by the same owner and designed by the same architect, Wood Street (constmcted in 1902) forms an important architectural cornposition at the southwest comer of Wood Street and the Boulevard of the Allies in downtown Pittsburgh.
The Clow Farmhouse is a well-preserved Greek Revival house in a rural setting in North Sewickley Township. The 1830 farmhouse, set back 250 feet from Chapel Drive on the crest of a hill, is surrounded by approximately two dozen mature maple trees.
Records indicate that Greensburg Academy was built shortly after 1806. This two story building is constructed in the Georgian style with three bays across the front and rear wall, and two bays within each side wall. Door end window openings are arched.
