Laurel Hill Furnace

The Laurel Hill Furnace is one of the largest and best preserved of the old iron blast furnaces in western Pennsylvania. Is was built in 1845 by Hezekiah Reed, Gallagher and Hale. Blasting was discontinued there between 1855 and 1860.

Laurel Hill furnace is a rectangular stone furnace, tapering from base to top. It is a well built example of a typical Pennsylvania iron furnace of the mid-nineteenth century. The stack of the furnace, built of massive cut stone, has four arches at its base compared to the usual two or three and is fastened together with four iron tie rods in each directions. The bosh is intact so it is possible to step
inside and view specific structural features.
