Dr. Utech's research interests are in the Liliaceae, particularly taxonomy, anatomy, cytology, and life history. He has done field work throughout North America, primarily in the southeast, northwest, and Great Lakes regions, Europe, and East Asia.
He earned a B.S. and an M.S. in botany from the University of Wisconsin at Madison, a Ph.D. in biology from Washington University in St. Louis, and an OTS Fellow at the Universidad de Costa Rica, San Jose.
