Burkholder Covered Bridge

The Burkholder Covered Bridge, also known as the Althouse Bridge or Beechdale Bridge, is a charming historic landmark located along Burkholder Bridge Road in Brothersvalley Township of Somerset County. Spanning Buffalo Creek, the bridge features classic Burr Arch truss construction, a design known for its strength and elegance.

Initially constructed in 1870 (unknown builder), the bridge is 52 feet long and 12 feet wide. The bridge underwent a significant rehabilitation in 1990 to preserve its structural integrity and historical character. Unlike many covered bridges in the region, the Burkholder Bridge remains open to vehicular traffic. It is owned and maintained by the county, continuing to serve both practical and heritage roles in the community.

With its modest dimensions and enduring craftsmanship, the Burkholder Covered Bridge stands as a quiet testament to 19th-century engineering and rural Pennsylvania's commitment to preserving its cultural landmarks.
